North (2) - waterfalls

The typhoon blew winter across the peaks, but fell as rain down here. It kept me off the mountains, but made the falls a very attractive plan B.

North (1) - Byakkotai

As October hurtled towards November I had a bunch of holidays that needed to be taken. Over here, you're allowed to roll them around once, after that they just 'disappear'. No really, if you don't take them, they're gone! 'It's Japanese labour law', they say, 'it's just the way things are.' 'I'll take them all now then', I say, 'because that's just theft.'
They don't like it at all, but I don't care at all, so I guess that makes us even... and me on holiday for three weeks.
I went north first of all, with a view to hitting a couple of peaks before the snow came. In the end I managed just the one. In one night, the last typhoon of the season closed the mountain pass for the winter, scuppering my plans for a second, and sending me off the waterfalls and lakes instead.
Before hitting the hills, I headed to Aizu Wakamatsu, where I had unfinished business. I wanted to pay my respects to the Byakkotai, something I&#…
